South Adventure

The coral reef, the whales, the paths of the deep south

TOUR DESCRIPTION

Infinite white beaches, crystalline and pristine seas, the biodiversity of the Coral Reef, the humpback whales swimming in the Mozambique canele, the timeless fishing villages: the southern coast of Madagascar is one of the most fascinating and, at the same time, less visited by tourists. What, in the eighteenth century, was a place of refuge for pirates and smugglers, today is the home of the “Vezo”, skilled fishermen who live following the rhythm of nature and the seasons.

There are few travelers who choose to undertake this adventurous albeit difficult path (but never anyone who regrets it).

Here are some of the most significant stages that await you.

Itinerary

DAY 1 - Towards Antananarivo and beyond

Your Southern Adventure begins in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, with its incredible multitude of treasures to discover. The chaos of the city might hit you, but don’t worry! Upon your arrival at IVATO airport we will be there to welcome you to accompany you to the hotel, a relaxing location surrounded by greenery.

Accommodation at: Au Bois Vert or similar

DAY 2 - One day in Tulear

Immediately after breakfast we will go to the airport, where the flight to Tulear will be waiting for us. Generally, this is considered a simple stopover to go to the South Seas but, in our case, it will be one of the most exciting and meaningful experiences of the trip. We will dedicate the day to visit the villages and a school where the Aid4Mada Onlus association has brought drinking water by building some wells.

Accommodation at: Eden Palm or similar

DAY 3 - Timeless relaxation on the South Seas

After the exciting visit to Tulear and the meeting with its inhabitants, we will head to the tropical beaches of Anakao. Here we will go to the discovery of a peaceful Vezo fishing village, also known as “the nomads of the sea”, which we will reach by sea with an hour by motorboat. And it is in this incredible place that we will spend the following days. And here, right from this land, our Adventure in the South will begin.

Accommodation at: Peter Pan or similar

DAY 4 - Visiting Nosy Ve

After a first day of relaxation, spent cradled by the hammock close to the waves or sunbathing, we can use this new day by visiting Nosy Ve. Deserted white sand beaches characterize this uninhabited coral island, which is home to the world’s southernmost breeding colony of red-tailed tropical birds.

Accommodation at: Peter Pan or similar

DAY 5 - By pirogue to Nosy Satrana

The last day at sea in Amakao we can use it by visiting the deserted island of Nosy Satrana. After an idyllic lunch on the beach, we will be able to swim in the lagoon admiring the mangroves, woody plants particularly precious for the planet, thanks to their peculiar ability to absorb more carbon dioxide than many other terrestrial species. The herons and the spirits of the ancestors – who according to the locals live under the branches of a large tamarind tree – will be the only ones to keep us company.

Accommodation at: Peter Pan or similar

DAY 6 - Tsimanampetsotsa Park and the blind fish

We will leave Anakao at dawn: heading south, of course. After a journey of about two hours on a sandy track, we will arrive at Tsimanampetsotsa National Park, a protected natural area that is home to several of the oldest baobabs in the world, a salt lake with flamingos and a bizarre cave, the natural habitat of a blind fish. without any pigmentation. At the end of our excursion, we will set off again in the direction of Ambola.

Accommodation at: Le Domaine d’Ambola or similar

DAY 7 - The breathtaking views of Ambola and Itampolo

A small fishing village with its white beaches awaits us, where we can enjoy some well-deserved relaxation. After lunch, we will resume our journey along the sandy track towards Itampolo, among unique and inimitable views.

Accommodation at: Chez Ernestine or similar

DAY 8 - The end of the Coral Reef

Once in Itampolo, where the Malagasy Great Barrier Reef ends, we can spend the day relaxing on the beach, snorkeling or diving. And who knows; if we are lucky we could also find some pirate galleons in these clear waters. In Itampolo, an ancient fishing village, there will be no shortage of suggestions thanks to the wild landscape in which it is immersed.

Accommodation at: Chez Ernestine or similar

DAY 9 - Lavanono, a surfer's paradise

The following morning at sunrise, we will set off from Itampolo along a challenging track towards Lavanono, a remote fishing village located at the far end of the southwestern coast, between a massive plateau overlooking it and a long chain of cliffs. Lavanono is a real paradise for surfers, with its incredible waves.

Accommodation at: Chez Gigi or similar

DAY 10 - The southernmost point

Immediately after breakfast, we will leave to discover the Cap Saint Marie nature reserve, the southernmost point of Madagascar, which was born to protect tortoises. From here we can also reach a beach where we can observe the remains of the extinct elephant bird’s eggs. In the evening we will arrive at Faux Cap, a small lobster fishing village hidden from view by the dunes.

Accommodation at: Hotel Libertalia or similar

DAY 11 - Towards the Berenty Private Reserve

Immediately after breakfast, we will leave in the direction of the Berenty Private Reserve, crossing desert landscapes with peculiar flora including thorny plants and baobabs. In the surroundings of Tsihombe we will also be able to observe the funerary art that characterizes the great African island, in particular the cemeteries of Antandroy and Mahafaly. In the late afternoon we will arrive at the Reserve, where we will spend the night.

Accommodation at: Berenty Lodge or similar

DAY 12 - The oldest reserve in Madagascar

We will spend this stage of the tour entirely visiting the Berenty Private Reserve, an unparalleled and ancient natural heritage, which houses a real gallery of tamarinds. In the Reserve also live the ring-tailed lemurs, who will accompany us to discover their habitat.

Accommodation at: Berenty Lodge or similar

DAY 13 - The enchanted peninsula of Fort Dauphin

After a night inside the Berenty Private Reserve, we will leave very early towards the city of Fort Dauphin, also called Taolagnaro. After spending most of our tour between fishing villages and sandy tracks, arriving in the city will represent a kind of return to civilization. On the way, we will admire the extraordinary location of Fort Dauphin, nestled between green mountains and the sea, on a peninsula that seems enchanted.

Accommodation at: Chez George Libanona or similar

DAY 15 - Return home

We will spend the last day of our trip to Madagascar visiting the capital, savoring its colors and scents. Upon boarding, we will be transferred to Ivato airport and from the window we will greet these places that will inexorably become part of us.
